                                   KATE WINSLET SINGS
Proving herself more than the talented screen actress we know her to be, Kate Winslet also sings ‘What If’, the spin
off single from the new animated version of
A Christmas Carol – The Movie. The promo that
accompanies the release was shot recent- ly in a Victorian house in central London, directed by Paul Donellon, produced by Chris Horton and lit on Fuji by Martin
Testar. And Winslet, who also provides
the voice of Belle, Scrooge’s long lost
love in the movie,
looks radiant throughout.
“The idea,” says Testar, “is
that Kate is in
this house and
is aware of the
spirit of Belle
being there
with her. The brief was that she’s wandering around on a fair winter’s morning, a clear cold day, bumping into the spirit of this girl as she’s singing. We managed to achieve the effect of this cool wintry light com- ing in from outside.
“That was shot in September. It was difficult to do an enormous amount, we couldn’t put lights on the pavement, but I did manage to get lights outside of the windows. I used the F-400 stock knowing it would be
OVERLAND EXPRESS
After winning the Fuji-sponsored DM Davies Award at the International Film Festival of Wales in 1999, director Chris Forster has been hard at work on his new short, Overland, using
the stock that was part
of his prize.
For a week this past summer, the community and visitors to Pendine may be forgiven for imagining they had stepped back 75 years in time as they watched the majestic sight of ‘Babs’ race down the Sands.
But this was a special event recre- ated by Forster and his DP Roger Pugh Evans for Overland which aims to cap- ture the glory of the land speed record attempts of 1926 and 1927.
‘Babs’ was the nickname of the 27- litre ‘Higham Special’ used by Welsh speed king JG Parry Thomas in his ulti- mately tragic attempt on the land speed record.
In 1969 ‘Babs’ unmarked resting place was finally located and engi- neering lecturer Owen Wyn Owen began a painstaking excavation and restoration process to return Babs to her former glory.
Seventy-five years after ‘Babs’ first victory on Pendine she was now the centre of attention once again as Forster finally got the go ahead on his idea to use her story as a focus for a film that would celebrate the culture of speed.
With the dedicated support of Owen Wyn Owen and his team, ‘Babs’ rose to the occasion, in style,
running up and down the mea- sured mile for two days reaching 80 mph on some runs.
Made with the support of the Arts Council of Wales Film Lottery Fund and Fujifilm, Overland has its premiere at this year’s Festival in Cardiff. ■

“We also used the Steadicam, so that the camera is always moving. There’s a little section where you go into the animated film for about half a minute, and it works well because while animation is very flat we went against that with what we were doing. It looked good, and Kate was lovely...” ■ ANWAR BRETT
