Sonoma Agricultural Preservation and Open Space District - Lend a Hand! Land Stewards: Join a dynamic and dedicated stewardship work crew to assist with property maintenance and natural resource management activities including invasive plant removal, erosion control, road maintenance, and trail work.
Preserve Partners: Enroll your middle or high school class in this service-learning program that teaches about the importance of conserving a particular habitat type (vernal pool, oak woodland, grassland or coastal prairie, riparian) through hands-on land stewardship and citizen science projects at “adopted” open space preserves.
Volunteer Patrol: Help us be the “eyes and ears” of spectacular Sonoma County Open Space Preserves that are otherwise closed to the public by hiking around to observe and report on conditions of trails, waterways, vegetation, and access.
Volunteer Easement Monitors: Help us monitor privately-owned District-protected properties as part of our easement monitoring program. Volunteers visit many properties each year, hiking, monitoring, taking photos, talking with landowners, completing reports, and identifying issues of concern for our stewardship team.
Sonoma State Histori Park (SHP) and Petaluma Adobe SHP are historical sites that benefit the greatest from our docent volunteers. Depending upon need, recruitment and training take place at least once per year in September and October. Additional volunteer opportunities may exist and are available year round in museum curation, bookstore sales, landscape maintenance and special events.  Russian River Friendly Landscaping Planting Resilience: Stories, Science, and Strategies
Wednesday, February 6, 2019 from 7:30 am to noon - FREE
The Russian River Watershed Association will hold a Russian River Friendly-Landscaping event for landscapers in the Russian River watershed at the Santa Rosa Utilities Field Office, 35 Stony Point Rd, Santa Rosa.
Event presentations will cover restoring, replanting, and regrowing Russian River watershed landscapes after the October fires.
The keynote speaker is Douglas Kent, author of several titles including Firescaping and Ocean Friendly Gardens. Other speakers include Chris Grabil, Steve Quarles (UC Berkeley), Kristin Maharg Suarez (Community Soil Foundation), Scott Sherman (ReScape), and Veronica Bowers (Native Song Bird Care). The event will end with a panel discussion on the free, easy-to-permit landscape design templates for the fire rebuild developed by Sonoma-Marin Saving Water Partnership.
Planting Resilience: Stories, Science, and Strategies is a free event funded by the Russian River Watershed Association and its member agencies. Doors open at 7:00 am and registration is required.
