Direct Sheer Stress On A Key

Key: one of the machine element which is used to connect the

transmission shaft to rotating machine element like pulley, gear,

sprocket or fly wheel.

Key Joint : consist of shaft, hub and key

Function of Key:

◦ To transmit torque from the shaft on the hub of mating
element

◦ To prevent relative rotational motion between the shaft and
the joint machine element like gear or pulley. In most of the

cases, key also prevent axial motion between two element.
