Example 1

     ◦ A shaft 50mm in diameter is carrying 370kW at 3600 rpm. A 12-mm square

key transmit the power to the hub. If the allowable compressive stress is 250
Mpa, what is the minimum length of a key required to support the

        compressive load?

                                                                                                          ANSWER L= 26mm

        Example 2

     ◦ A shaft 50mm in diameter is carrying 370kW at 3600 rpm. A 12-mm square
key transmit the power to the hub. If the allowable shearing stress is 350

MPa, how long should the key be based on the shearing stress?

                                                                                                         ANSWER L= 9.3mm
