                        KNOW IT Think Critically

Your Best Listening and Note-Taking Conditions

Build basic skills. Think of a recent class where you were able to listen and take notes effectively.
                          1. Describe the environment (course title, classroom setting, and so on).
                          2. Describe the instructor’s style (lecture, group discussion, question and answer).
                          3. Describe your level of preparation and attitude toward the class.
                          4. Describe the note-taking style you typically use in the class and note how effective it is.
                          5. Describe any barriers to effective listening in the class.
Now think of a recent class in which you found it hard to listen and take notes.
                          1. Describe the environment (course title, classroom setting, and so on).
                          2. Describe the instructor’s style (lecture, group discussion, question and answer).
                          3. Describe your level of preparation and attitude toward the class.
                          4. Describe the note-taking style you typically use in the class, and note how effective it is.
                          5. Describe any barriers to effective listening in the class.

Take it to the next level. Examining the two situations you identified, identify three conditions
that seem to be crucial for you to effectively listen and take notes.
Move toward mastery. Think about the more difficult listening and note-taking situation.
For each of the three conditions you identified, describe how to either (a) to make sure the condi-
tion occurs, or (b) compensate for the condition if it is out of your control.

                        WRITE IT Communicate

Emotional intelligence journal: Understanding your needs and making changes.
Think about a situation in which you had trouble taking effective notes. Was it the teacher’s pace?
The subject matter of the class? How did you feel about the situation and what did you do? After
you describe the situation, identify three note-taking strategies from this chapter that could help you
in the future. How might they help you create a more positive outcome?
Real-life writing: Determining the best method for you. Over the next week, commit
to trying at least three types of note-taking formats in your classes. If possible, choose a different
format for each subject. Before entering the class, prepare by readying your notebook with the
correct formatting for the particular note-taking format. Take your class notes using the new
6 format. When the week is over, think about which style worked best for you and which would
CHAPTER 160 be the most beneficial going forward.
