Take the Lead
Build basic skills. Create an image of yourself as a leader. Referring to the coverage in the
chapter, generate a list of five leadership traits or skills you commonly demonstrate. Thinking
about these traits, describe a situation in your life—personal, academic, or workplace—where you
could take a leadership role.
Take it to the next level. Keeping in mind the components of leadership from this chapter
on p. 315, answer the following questions:
1. Leadership demands action. What would be your action as a leader in this situation?
2. Leadership means inf uencing others. Would you lead by example or directive? How would
you like to inf uence the thoughts, feelings, or actions of those in your group?
3. Leadership happens in the context of a group. Who are the people with whom you would
be working?
4. Leadership involves reaching a goal together. What is your goal for the group?
5. Leadership demands that the group and the leader share a goal. How would you get the rest
of your group on board with this goal?
Move toward mastery. Identify the specific steps you will take in the next three months to
Thriving in a Diverse Global Community
lead in this situation. Put them in your calendar and treat them as tasks to be completed. If
possible, evaluate your experience after three months. How well did you follow your plan? Did
you and your group achieve a goal? How did your actions move the group forward?
