Kerala has seen significant improvements in the life expectancy of both
males and females. Male life expectancy increased from 46 years during
1951–1961 to 68 years in 1990. Over the same interval, female life
expectancy increased from 50 years to 75 years.
Caste ratio
Kerala has a reputation of being, communally, one of the most religiously
diverse states in India. Hinduism is followed by the majority of Keralites
(54.7%). The major religions followed in Kerala are Hinduism (54.7% —
Hinduism in Kerala), Islam (26.6%) and Christianity (18.4%)and the
remaining 0.33% follow other religions or have no religion. Various tribal
people in Kerala have retained the religious beliefs of their ancestors
