1 まだ ‘still, not yet’(= no change)
まだ means ‘still’ in affirmative sentences, and ‘not yet’ in negative sentences. It is used to
indicate that a certain situation or state holds without any change.
1. まだ外は、明るいですよ。 It’s still bright outside.
2. 専門は、まだわかりません。 I don’t know my major yet.
3. 今朝、たくさん食べたけど、まだおなかがすいています。 I am still hungry, even though I ate a lot this morning.
4. 今朝、たくさん食べたから、まだおなかがすきません。 I am not hungry yet, because I ate a lot this morning.
5. ロバートさん、まだ勉強しているんですか。 Mr. Robert, are you still studying?
6. チョーさん、まだ仕事中ですか。 Mr. Cho, are you still working?
2 もう ‘already, no longer’ (= change)
もう means ‘already’ in affirmative sentences, and ‘no longer’ in negative sentences. It
indicates a change of a situation or a state.
1. もう寝るんですか。
Are you going to sleep already?
2. もう遅いから寝ましょう。
Let’s go to sleep because it’s already late.
