4 Verb stem + に (+ directional verbs) ‘(go/come, etc.) to do X’
A purpose clause can be added to sentences with directional verbs such as 行く・来る・帰
る. The purpose clause must end with the verb stem and the particle に.
1. 明日ロンドンへボーイフレンドに会いに行きます。 I am going to London tomorrow to see my boyfriend.
2. これから日本語の先生と話しに研究室へ行くんです。
From now, I am going to go to the office to talk to Japanese teacher.
Now, in (1), for example, “London” is a location where the speaker will see her boyfriend (i.e. place of action ‘seeing’), and at the same time, her destination (i.e. where she is going to). The particle for “London”, however, will always be either へ or に in this case, and never で. This is due to the fact that the destination ロンドンへ needs to be specified for the verbs such as 行く (unless clear from the context), but the location of action ロンドン で is more of an additional piece of information for verbs such as 会う.
