February is a special month because we, as a people, come
together to honor and celebrate Black History.
The purpose of Black History Month is to give space for
Americans to remember and recognize the contributions of
Black people in medicine, innovation, government,
businesses, culture, and more. We in Ohio have the
privilege to look within our own state to celebrate Black
achievement which shaped and formed our communities,
country, and nation. Notable Ohioans such as Rita Dove,
Toni Morrison, Jesse Owens, and more, paved the way for
Black innovation and success that will carry on for
generations to come.
While we lift up the accomplishments of Black people in
February, we all are beneficiaries of that history 365 days a
year; therefore, Black History is celebrated not just one
month out of the year, but every single day.
The incomparable determination and spirit of Black people
runs through my blood, and I am proud to be a descendent
of people who have achieved, preserved, and built so much
to be proud of.
Let us celebrate those who came before us, and let’s
celebrate each other.
