The big teams around us, the teams pushing for promotion
share these features and here at Raynes Park we are playing
catch up. Three years ago the club had debts in the tens of
thousands, future of our ground was uncertain in the face of a
residential planning application and even the status of the club
was in doubt. A threadbare organisation held together by noth-
ing more than the sheer determination and dedication that has
been a feature of the club ever since.
We have gone from also-rans
Well, we’ve come a long way since then and the fact that Vale
could travel across the Channel and come within a whisker of
inflicting the first home defeat on the league’s high-flyers is
an indication of exactly how far. We have gone from also-rans
to contenders but we are still punching above our weight and
we still have distance to go before we can compete with the
resources of the league's high-flyers but we do have the com-
mitment and the belief and the people to take us to the top and
that is where we intend to be.
Today we welcome Cobham to Grand Drive and I look for-
ward to meeting as many of you as I can.
