In nor of Dr. Seuss Day, 6th Grade religion students explored the well-known
story of The Sneetches. To breathe new life into this tale, Mr. Tobin developed an original
lesson integrating the weekly Gospels we explore, the current chapter in our textbook, and
guided students in viewing the moral of the story through the lens of Catholic Social
Teaching. The pillar our class focused on was “Solidarity”. Catholic Social Teaching
proclaims that as we are created in the image of God, redeemed by Jesus Christ, every human
life is “invaluable and worthy of respect [and] dignity.” Solidarity, specifically, calls us to an
understanding that “We are one human family whatever our...differences...The Gospel calls
us to be peacemakers. Our love for all our sisters and brothers demands that we promote
peace in a world surrounded by...conflict.” After guided questioning and viewing the video,
students used a Google Jam board to make connections between Catholic Social Teaching
and what they observed between the Sneetches.
Some of the student’s “Jams” include:
“When people have different characteristics that does not mean that they should
be divided. And that doing what is right for everyone is
often better than doing what is best for yourself.”
“I can learn that no matter my differences from other people
I should still treat them with respect.”
“I can incorporate one way from the lesson about The Sneetches into my
everyday life by knowing that being different is okay because
God gave us special talents that we should be proud of.”
