Child’s voice service
When parents or guardians separate, it can be stressful and upsetting for the children - particularly when the most important people in their lives struggle to agree on parenting or childcare matters.
At Family Works however, we’re working hard to make sure that the voice of the child is not only heard, but taken into account. After all, while it’s the parents and carers who need to make the decisions, hearing how your children think and feel is a really important part in helping you develop the best plan for your family.
During the family dispute resolution process a specially trained children’s voice practitioner is able to meet with your children and explore their thoughts and feelings.
In a neutral and safe space, your children will be able to have their say on important topics related to their care and new family situation. This may include conversations around how the current arrangements are working, how they’re feeling, and how they would like the family to work together following the separation.
At the end of the meeting the child will agree on what messages they want to be shared and the information will be passed on to the family mediator. Your child’s thoughts and feelings can then be considered during the family mediation meetings. This will help you, as parents and/or carers, to make the best possible decisions and plans for your children.
Family Works Child’s Voice Service will:
g give your children private time to talk freely about their thoughts and feelings, and agree on what is shared with their parents and/or carers
g help your children clearly articulate what they think and feel
g help make sure your children feel safe, respected and heard during the family dispute resolution process
g ensure everyone involved respects your children’s thoughts and feelings
g give your children a person to talk to who is skilled and familiar with talking with children about sensitive topics.
When you meet with your mediator, you will be given a child’s voice flyer to share with your children. This flyer has been created with children in mind and will speak directly to them about the service.
