Ground-Level Decks
• Ground level decks must be constructed of a single color and
must have trim boards on all sides that conceal the understructure
of the deck.
• Must conform to one of two color schemes either single color or
two-color (see color palette for more information)
• Wrought iron railings only
Railings:
• Composite (any manufacturer)
• Aluminum
• Vinyl
• Wood*
• Wrought iron- Black
With the following stipulations:
1. Any railing may be 36” to 42” in height and must be constructed with 2 x 2 picket
balusters spaced 3.5” to 4” apart with 4 x 4 posts placed every 6’ at minimum, a
continuous flat 2 x 6 cap boards, square (90 degree) corners and 2 x 4 to and bottom
boards, that may be placed on either side of the railing, attached to the post
2. When choosing a flat black wrought iron railing, the railing need not have a top cap
board
3. All railings must fully comply with Fairfax County Code for deck guards
4. If building a railing around a ground level deck, the requirements is to choose either a
natural wood or composite deck railing what is the same color as the deck, or a flat black
railing (wrought iron, aluminum, or vinyl)
5. When using composite decking material, support balusters may be white with black
spindles between balusters and a top cap that is the same color of the composite decking
used for the main deck.
*Wood railings must be 2” X 2” simple picket design at height of either 36” or 42”. 4” X
4” vertical posts must be spaced a minimum of every 6’; and a continues flat 2” X 6”
capboard with square corners and 2” X 4” top and bottom boards be attached to the post
