why Glassy?
- Glassy material is the unique result of an R&D project that started 4 years ago.
- Glassy is the first fully transparent composite water slide part in the Water Park Sector.
- In Glassy material, refractive indices of resin and fibre are almost the same. Therefore, the fibre inside the composite material completely disappears.
- This fibre gives an extra toughness against fracture to the composite leading a similar obtainable thickness in the final part compared with the opaque slide part thicknesses. The competitors' material for the transparent slide is acrylic. As this material has a low fracture toughness, the thickness of the acrylic parts should be much higher resulting in a very heavy acrylic slide part.
- Also the acrylic slide parts are produced with a very special manufacturing technique using expensive moulds. This process leads to extremely high costs for acrylic tubes. Glassy slide parts are manufactured by using a similar process to our existing L-RTM method. Therefore the cost of Glassy will be significantly lower than the cost of acrylic parts (but still higher than the opaque and translucent parts).
- The acrylic slide parts do not have any connection flanges. Therefore very special steel flanges and insulation materials should be used during the assembly of acrylic tubes. Whereas Glassy slide parts have got their own connection flanges resulting in the same assembly process with the ordinary opaque slide proper.
- Moreover, with the use of special additives and coatings, the resistance against UV and Chlorine on the Glassy material is higher than the competitors' materials.
- Finally, most of the damages which could occur during the use of Glassy slides could be repaired at site via special techniques developed by Polin R&D.
