CHECKING PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT
Personal protective equipment should be checked and inspected before every use.
Regular inspection by a competent person should be performed at least once every 12
months in line with the manufacturer’s instructions. When used in extreme
environments they will need to be inspected more often.
When equipment is inspected, the process and procedures should be documented and filed
in a location where they can be easily accessed for inspection, audit, or review.
Instructions provided with the equipment at the time of purchase must be followed,
when conducting the check. These instructions must be stored in a location accessible to
users. If required by the manufacturer, the equipment shall be returned to the
manufacturer for inspection, repair or recertification.
All equipment must be scrapped if the stress indicator or warning system has been
activated. If the PPE has been used to arrest a fall, remove all components of the system
from service and dispose of them according to manufacturer’s recommendation. 20
Before a fall arrest system is used; the user should inspect the work area to ensure
there are no Hazards in the potential fall path.
