TOPIC 2 – IDENTIFY WORK
PROCEDURES AND INSTRUCTIONS
CONSULT WITH AUTHORISED PERSONNEL TO SELECT
MATERIALS, TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT AND CHECK FOR
SERVICEABILITY
You will need to identify and consult with authorized personnel to select materials, tools,
and equipment. This may be a supervisor or site manager.
Your tools and equipment are vital to your work. You must ensure that all tools and
equipment are cleaned and are checked for serviceability. This will keep your valuable
items in good condition and ensure that they are safe for your use next time.
All tools and equipment should be clean with all dirt, mud moisture or other
contaminants removed; that can damage it and checked for damage or other faults. If
anything is wrong, you need to report it and carry out any repairs if you can.
Some tools and equipment require regular maintenance. This might include:
Oiling timber surfaces
Greasing metal surfaces
Lubricating moving parts
Most tools and equipment will have specific storage instructions that will be outlined
by the manufacturer or by the owner of the tools. These instructions might include
storing in a specially made case before it is placed in the tool box or coiling the cords.
These instructions are in place to make sure they will not be damaged, and they can
be easily found next time somebody needs to use them.
Some points to be aware of when selecting materials, tools, and equipment:
When selecting tools for working on a ladder, it is important not to select
tools that require the use of both hands and dynamic movements such as axes
and crowbars.
