P. 53
Draw up the slack until the coat-to-core unions formed at the T and two hash
marks meet at the top of the eye. Now that this portion of the splice is complete,
you should hide the end of the coat by smoothing the coat from the T to the three
hash marks. Take your time and be thorough so the tapered end slides
completely into the core at the three hash marks.
Remove the fid and smooth the pucker. Poke through the coat at the X to
make some visible mark on the core inside. Also mark the core where it exits
from the Z. Pull on the core tail until the mark you made under the X exits from
the coat at the Z. Unbraid the tail, comb and fan it; then cut it off at a 45-degree
angle between the two marks. Hold the rope gently at the union, and ease the
coat from there around the eye until the core tail disappears. Trim the ends.
Take a firm grip of the rope close to the slip knot or attach it with a hook to a
firm surface. If you measured carefully from the beginning of the splice, there
should be enough slack in the bunched coat to roll down off the tail end and the
coat-to-core joints.
Bunching may occur at the throat as the doubled core section and displaced
yarns are distributed. If it does, roll and flex the rope or gently tug on the tail of
the core. Begin this process gently but firmly. As you proceed, you may have to
exert more pressure, perhaps to the point of pounding on the throat with a
wooden mallet.
