Trim the end of the rope evenly, cutting off melted ends, or tape the end to be
spliced. Using a tubular fid (see page 12), measure one full fid length from the
tape and label this point with an R. (To determine the appropriate fid for the rope
you are using, see page 12.)
Add the amount of rope necessary to form the eye or the loop around the
thimble (see page 16), if one is used. Mark an X there, at the throat of the splice.
This is a complicated splice to complete with a thimble, so measurements are
critical.
Move up the rope at least five full fid lengths and tie a tight slip knot.
Return to the X and gently push aside the strands of the coat (the rope’s outer
covering) to expose its inner core. Pull a small loop of the core through the coat
as carefully as possible, and draw a single hash mark across the core. Then
continue pulling out the core until its working end is completely exposed, and
tape the end. Work the cover down into place to confirm that the X and hash
mark are aligned and equal distances from the coat and core end, respectively.
