The harness consists of three pieces: an endless loop that fits over the head
(A), another endless loop that, when doubled, goes around your trunk (B), and a
tether with snaphook (C).
To make A, cut off a length of rope 40 inches (1.02 m) long. On both ends,
measure back from the end 4 inches (100 mm) and tape at that spot. Unlay both
ends back to the tape, taking care to preserve the three strands. Execute a short
splice, as described in chapter 2. Three rounds of tucks on each side are adequate
for this purpose.
To make B, you will need to get your chest measurements, over foul-weather
gear if need be. Double the measurements; to that amount, add 10 inches (250
mm). Cut the second piece of rope equal to that measurement. Execute another
short splice in this piece, but only after wrapping each end around endless loop
A. Secure piece B with four seizings, as visible in the drawing on the previous
page.
The rope that remains is for the tether, which should be long enough to let you
move around but short enough to keep you in or within reach of the boat. Ten
