AKC’s Fetch Program
A Fun Way to Bond with
Your Dog
One of the latest performance events that first
began in early 2024 by the American Kennel Club
(AKC) is called AKC Fetch, designed to provide
both physical and mental exercise for dogs and their
owners. This program offers a structured way to
engage in one of the most beloved activities: playing
fetch.
What is AKC Fetch?
AKC Fetch is a non-competitive, pass-fail test
that assesses a dog's ability to retrieve objects. The
program is open to all breeds and includes four
levels of titles: Novice, Intermediate, Advanced,
and Retriever. Each level requires the dog to
demonstrate increasing levels of skill and obedience
in retrieving objects.
Levels and Titles
1. Novice (FTN): At this level, dogs must retrieve
a tennis ball, bumper, or toy thrown 30 feet. The
course includes four distractions, and the dog must
complete three single retrieves.
2. Intermediate (FTI): Dogs must retrieve
objects thrown 50 feet, navigating through eight
distractions. The course may include fun objects
like lawn chairs or ornaments.
3. Advanced (FTA): This level involves more
complex tasks, with retrieves at 70 feet and the
inclusion of blinds (screens) that hide the objects
from the dog's view.
4. Retriever (FTR): The highest level, where dogs
must demonstrate advanced retrieving skills,
including memory components and responding to
signals.
