AKC’s S.T.A.R. Puppy
Program
A Bright Start for
Puppies and Owners
The American Kennel Club (AKC) has introduced
an exciting program called AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy,
designed to get puppies and their owners off to
a great start. Launched in 2008, this program
focuses on Socialization, Training, Activity,
and a Responsible owner (S.T.A.R.), providing a
comprehensive foundation for puppies to grow into
well-mannered dogs.
How the Program Works
The AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy program is
structured to be both educational and
enjoyable for puppies and their owners.
Here’s how it works:
1. Enrollment: Puppies up to one year
old can enroll in the program. Owners
must attend a basic training class taught
by an AKC Approved CGC Evaluator.
2. Training Classes: The program
requires attendance at a minimum of
six training classes. These classes cover
essential skills and behaviors, such as
sitting on command, walking on a leash,
and tolerating grooming.
3. The S.T.A.R. Test: At the end of the training
course, puppies must pass a 20-item test that
evaluates both owner and puppy behaviors. This
includes maintaining the puppy’s health, ensuring
proper socialization, and demonstrating basic
obedience skills.
4. Certification: Upon passing the test, puppies
receive a certificate and a gold AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy
