get jazzed when they “read” the dog correctly for
an alert! One of the best things about Scentwork
(other venues are National Association of Canine
Scentwork (NASCW) and Canine Performance
Event (CPE)) is that the sport can easily be done
at home, without competing, and great benefits
can be achieved simply by playing the game. It
has been shown that using the olfactory system in
dogs is calming, producing endorphins and helps
anxious dogs gain confidence in new situations. If
your anxious Chow learns to push into small areas,
knock over boxes and search higher than his head,
new physical environments are not as scary. A quick
search in a hotel room prior to a trial or show can be
settling and lead to better performance.

Another, more difficult in some ways, scent sport is
Tracking. Longer tracks are laid outdoors, which the
dog must follow to find articles (gloves, etc). Tracks
become longer and more difficult with turns as you
progress up the levels to earn titles. Of course, once
you know how to lay a track, it can just be a nice
morning out with your dog, enjoying the outdoors
and watching your dog work through a new
challenge. (Good exercise, too!)
