The Munter hitch is used by climbers for belaying a
partner. In an emergency, it can also be used for rap-
pelling or lowering a heavy object. The Munter hitch
does require the use of a pear-shaped locking cara-
biner (called an HMS carabiner) to prevent a cata-
                  strophic accident.
Some people object that this hitch can cause
kinks in the rope. However, this is a case of user-error
caused by holding the belay hand off to the side.
When used properly with the belay hand parallel to
the running rope, there is very little twisting.

                  1. start with the rope clipped into the hms carabiner.
