INTRODUCTION TO PFDSF
The Psychological Fitness to Drive Scale for Filipinos (PFDSF) is a locally
developed test that aims to assess the degree of mental fitness of individuals to drive
safely along the road. The PFDSF is a product of a three-year extensive and rigorous
research of the author in his Master’s thesis for the degree of Master of Arts in
Psychology – Major in Clinical Psychology at De La Salle University – Dasmariñas.
This seventy-two (72) item scale is a valid and reliable measure in assessing
psychological fitness to drive among Filipino drivers. It is divided into two (2) factors:
Maladaptive and Dysfunctional Driving (MDD) and Responsible and Safe Mobility
(RSM).
One of the special features of this scale is the Filipino and English translation
embedded in the test booklet for which can help test takers gain clear understanding
of the instruction and items within the PFDSF. Texts are printed in Filipino followed by
its English translation, italicized and placed inside parentheses.
Test administrators are advised to use this scale with caution. Results of the
PFDSF are interpretable with the provided guidelines in this manual. However, an
integrated assessment of the results together with driving performance or a
supplemental psychological test may be helpful in providing an overall status report
of the psychological fitness to drive of the examinee. The scale is not a stand-alone
measure yet may be utilized for small scale researches.
