P. 1
What is tithing?
Tithing is the practice of setting aside 10% of your increase or profits to support
the work of God.
Where tithe first mention in the Bible?
The first real mention of tithe in the Bible is found in Genesis 14:20 where
Abraham gives a tithe to Melchizedek.
Where is tithe mention in the New Testament?
Tithe is often considered an Old Testament practice which no longer applies to
modern-day Christians. However, the New Testament teaches the exact same
principles of tithing.
Matthew 23:23 says, “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you
hypocrites! You give a tenth of your spices—mint, dill and cumin. But you have
neglected the more important matters of the law—justice, mercy and
faithfulness. You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the
former.
That last line says it all. ‘You should have practiced the latter, without
neglecting the former.’ Jesus did not abolish tithing. He said we should do both,
meaning pay your tithe and help the poor as well.
Why should Christian tithe?
God commands His people to return a 10% tithe to support the work of the gospel.
However, think about it for a moment.
1) God should be first in our lives and including our income.
“Honour the Lord with your possessions, And with the first fruits of all your
increase; so your barns will be filled with plenty, and your vats will overflow with
new wine” (Proverbs 3:9-10).
