 Engagement & Retention Checklist – Part 1
Considerate communication
• Speak gender bilingually, be mindful of gendered wording, tone and metaphors in your speech and writing.
• Create a culture of psychological safety for both the 'in' and 'out' groups by building a Communications Contract with your team.
• Talk to your team about gender boxes and how gender stereotypes limit individual potential – for everyone. Awareness is the first step in breaking free.
Meetings
• Call on everyone in the room and ensure everyone is heard, not just the loudest or most confident voices.
• Gently check the interrupters and invite those interrupted to finish, e.g. “An interesting point James, I’d like to hear more once Atsumi has finished.”
• Amplify ideas by restating them and using names, e.g. “That’s a great build on Amira’s idea.” Give public credit to people whose ideas usually get overlooked.
Decompartmentalisation
• Role model integrating people’s personal realities into work. Talk about your own personal life and encourage others to do so too.
• Be open about your own experiences when coaching your team through life and career cycle phases. They’ll believe you understand if they know you’ve experienced something similar.
• Be a role model by finding ways to break from your own gender box, whether that’s being a more assertive woman or a more communal man.
