Flexibility
• Start by assuming most roles can be done flexibly, in terms of time and location, unless shown otherwise. Make it the default. Then support the implementation.
• Support all genders to work flexibly, don’t make it a women’s issue. It’s a huge win / win for all genders, all parents and most families.
• Encourage your team members to feel empowered to make lateral, lattice moves. Let them know what opportunities exist in other areas of the company.
Unacceptable Behaviour
• Never let unacceptable comments go, over time that is what makes them acceptable. Be clear about what language won’t be tolerated – from anyone.
• Train and empower your colleagues who are witnesses or bystanders to inappropriate behaviour on how to intervene and support their colleagues.
• Ensure team members know they can come to you if they have concerns over comments or behaviour - and that you'll do something about it.
Monitoring
• Note who does office housework such as taking notes, organising team social activities and pouring coffee in meetings. Don’t always accept the first person to volunteer, instead share the tasks among the team and between genders.
• Proactively monitor the gender balance of exits, are you losing more team members of any one gender?
