Development & Promotion Checklist – Part 1
Feedback
• Consider how objective your feedback is - does it focus on the person’s actions and behaviour or their personality or appearance?
• Check whether feedback is specific and practical enough that they will know how to replicate positive behaviour and improve in other areas. Tie specific behavioural changes to business outcomes.
• Review the language used in the feedback. Is it gender bilingual?
Performance evaluations
• Ensure that all panels are gender balanced. If it is just one person, consider involving the input of a colleague of another gender.
• Consider whether the evaluation criteria are objective and transparent. What evidence is there that the individual meets the criteria? Are you separating confidence and competence?
• Obtain objective feedback from a gender balanced group of the person’s colleagues and direct reports.
• Check the language used in the evaluation. Is it gender bilingual?
• Focus on the team, not just a few stars. By focusing on the good of the team you can help everyone to
reach their potential, not just those with the loudest voices.
