English Department Summer Reading Assignment Rationale and Requirements

Based on the course/grade level, students may be required to complete a summer reading assignment prior to
the school year at the discretion of the grade-level/course team. It is important to foster essential reading and
writing skills over the summer to help students avoid summer reading loss. Research supports the use of
summer reading programs to help students hone their reading skills.

        Summer Reading Program Goals:

            • To help students maintain reading and writing skills over the summer and avoid summer reading loss
            • To prepare students for the next level of English curriculum and for the college experience
            • To encourage students to become lifelong learners

Depending on the course/grade level, students could have up to three books to read and may also need to
complete an objective assessment (multiple choice test) and/or a written assessment based on the reading(s) at
the start of the school year (date determined by individual teacher). The assessment scores may be entered as a
quarter one assignment in the grade book.
