The Viking missions in the 1970s Orbi
were preceded over twenty years
later by Mars Global Surveyor. Mars Glob
Mars Global Surveyor was sent to
orbit Mars in 1996, arriving at the
red planet in 1997.
Here is an image taken by the Mars
Orbiter Camera (MOC) on global
surveyor. What does this look
like? This is the same “face” that
was imaged by Viking. Does it
look the same as it did in the
Viking image? Why or why not?
(You may need to go back to the
Viking image for the students to
compare.) This image of the face
was taken with a much better
camera, with higher resolution,
that shows the object is not a face
at all.
This is an image of
the Mars Global
Surveyor orbiter.
Again, note the solar
panels and
communications
antenna.
