The Gamma Ray Spectrometer discovered
large amounts of water ice underneath the
surface of Mars in the northern polar
regions. The colors on this map represent
the abundances of ice. The purples and
blues show where the most water ice exists
and the reds and oranges show where there
is less water ice. This discovery was vital to
the conception of a future mission to Mars
which is currently preparing for launch.
