Vaccines have saved millions of human lives and are widely recognized

as one of the most successful and effective health interventions in the world. The
term vaccine was first known in 1796, when the first smallpox vaccine was

invented. At that time, smallpox was a very deadly disease.The vaccine was
made by Edward Jenner, a doctor from Berkeley, a rural area in England in 1796.

It all started when Jenner noticed local people who worked as breeders.

Those who milked cows were often infected with cowpox (cow pox) which caused
lesions on their hands and arms.What's interesting about this observation is that

those who had been infected with the virus had become immune to the viral

infection that had plagued their village. The condition that Jenner made to start
the first research was known as vaccine making.

In the experiment, Jenner took pus from a cowpox lesion from the hand of
a milkmaid. He then passed it to an 8 year old boy, James Phipps, with the

cowpox virus. The suspicion was correct, the child turned out to be infected with
cowpox, but was able to recover soon.

A few weeks later, Jenner injected Phipps with chickenpox material. The

miracle happened, because there were no signs of pain in his body.
