KNOTS AND THEIR USE
Asthe reader will have seen in the previous pages, most (though not all) afthe
knots in this guide bear the stamp of the sea; and this, in fact, corresponds to
the history of this particular branch of human invention. Yet this does not
mean that if you know the characteristics of a good sailor's knot. you cannot
use it in other areas such as climbing or camping. The following summaries
may therefore be useful. The knots discussed in this book afe listed under the
four main categories in which they are most used: climbing, camping, sailing,
and fishing, giving for each activity a set of knots that would be useful to
know.
