tirmişler. Eskiden onbinlerce kadının hergün daldığı, para kazandığı bu meslek bugünde halâ binlerce kadın tarafından yapılıyor. Hatta yaşlı kadınlar tarafından yapılıyor. 70 yaşına kadar dalabileceklerini öğreniyorum. Gençlerin pek uğraşmadıklarını ama yaşlıların zevkle yaptıları bir meslek oldugunu söyleyebilirim.
Jeju Adası’nın bir çok sahilinde bu kadınlarla karşılaşılıyor. Haenyoları ziyarete gittiğimde ben de onlarla beraber yü- zeyim, dalayım, deniz canlısı yakalayım istedim. İyi ki de bu maceraya atlamışım. Çünkü o yaşta yapılacak ne kadar zor bir meslek olduğunu tecrübe ediyorum.
Haenyo’larla dalışım
Biliyorum benim için ne kadar cesaretli, ne kadar macera- perest bir kız diyorsunuz ama karşıma böyle şeyler çıktı mı da kaçırmak istemiyorum. Dünyanın bir ucunda köpekbalıkları ile yüzerim, bir ucunda aslanlar ile yürürüm veya timsahların üze- rine otururum veya bir okyanusta tüpsüz dalar kabuklu deniz canlısı çıkarırım... Bunları denemek, yaşamak lazım ki insanları anlayalım... Sahile gidince hemen dalış kıyafetleri veriyorlar bana. Ağırlıklarımı bağlayıp elimede filemi tutuşturuveriyor- lar. Paletlerim, maskem, eldivenlerim de hazır... Pasifik Okya- nusu’na bağlı Güney Denizi’ne atlayıp başlıyorum bu işin nasıl yapılacağını öğrenmeye ama su buz gibi. Pasifik Okyanusu’nun çok soğuk olduğunu daha önce Güney Afrika’da köpek balıkla- rı ile dalış yaparken tecrübe etmiştim zaten. Burada da durum değişmedi, 9-10 derecelik suya atladım atlamasına ama bayağı da bir şoklandım. O esnada tabii insan soğuğu hiç hissetmiyor. Benimle beraber suya giren kadınlar 60 ve 66 yaşlarındaydılar. Maşallah öyle yüzüyorlar, öyle dalıyorlar ki şaşırdım kaldım... Sa- atlerce o buz gibi suda yüzmek, dalış yapmak her babayiğidin harcı değil. Dünyayı gezerken gördüğüm, gerçek analar dün- yanın her yerinde aynı. Yaşı kaç olursa olsun çocuğuna bakmak istedikten sonra yaşın, havanın, soğuk veya sıcağın önemli ol- madığı ve çalışmanın baki olduğu bir gerçek.
is still performed by thousands of women. Even older wom- en perform this profession. I learn that the women can dive until they turn 70. I can say that young people do not prefer this profession, but old people seem to enjoy doing it.
You can see these women on many coasts of Jeju Island. When I visited the Haenyo women, I wanted to swim, dive and gather shellfish with them. I am glad I tried. Because I experienced that, this is a hard profession.
Diving with Haenyo women
I know you think that I am courageous and adventurer. However, I do not want to miss any opportunities. I swim with sharks at the far end of the world, I walk with lions at the other corner or I sit on the back of the crocodiles or I dive without breathing apparatus and I gather shellfish. We should try to experience this in order to understand peo- ple. When I arrive at the coast, they just give me the diving suits and connect they immediately strap the weights and give me the nets. My flippers, my mask, and my gloves are ready... I jump into the South Sea, connected to the Pacific Ocean and I start to learn how this profession is performed. However, the water is freezing. I have already experienced the ice-cold water of the Pacific Ocean when I swam with sharks. It is the same situation here. I got into 9-10-degree water; it was really a shock for me. But at that moment, I couldn’t feel the cold. The women, who dove with me, were 60 and 66 years old. I am surprised by the way these women swam and dove... It is not easy to swim and dive in the ice- cold water for a very long time. I observe the women and the mothers all over the world, they are always the same. The women work hard for taking care of their children re- gardless of the age and weather.
