Taşların Adası ve Tanrılar Adası
Gelelim Jeju Adası’nın taşlarına ve neden Tanrılar Adası denmesine. Bu ada volkanik bir ada olunca taşı da çok fazla. Adanın binlerce yıl öncesine giden tarih yelpazesinde insanlar bu taşı toprağı bol adaya ‘Taşların Adası’ demiş. Jeju Adası’n- da yaşayan yerli halk binlerce yıl önce bu taşları oya oya adam heykelleri yapmışlar. Bu gözleri büyük adam heykellerinin de kendilerini kötülüklere karşı koruduklarına inanmışlar. Bu ne- denle de adanın dört köşesinde bu heykellerden yapmışlar. Durum böyle olunca ada bu heykellerden dolayı uzun yıllardır ‘Tanrılar Adası’ olarak da anılmaya başlamış. Jeju Adası’nda yaşayan yerel halk için oldukça önemli olan bu heykeller büyük baba olarak da isimlendiriliyor. Evlerin önünde, dükkanlarda, köprü başlarında, ormanlarda, site girişlerinde bu heykelle- re heryerde rastlamak mümkün. Oldukça ilginç geldi bize de ama adanın gerçeklerinden biri. Bu adanın bir gerçeği daha var o da emektar kadınları. Bu ada balık kadınları ile de meşhur.
Balık Kadınlar yani Haenyolar
Güney Kore’nin Jeju Adası, dünyanın en ilginç kültürlerine, geleneksel yaşamlarına, halâ sürdürülen binlerce yıllık ge- leneklerine ev sahipliği yapan bir ada. Şimdi anlatacaklarım karşısında bayağı şaşıracak ve bu hayatları birazcık da olsa anlamak adına bu adaya gelmeye dahi karar verebilirsiniz.
Ben bu kadınları hep merak etmiştim. Adanın balık kadınları; bugün her ne kadar yıl 2018 olsa da bugunun mesleğini değil binlerce yıl öncesinin mesleğini icra ediyorlar. Denize tüpsüz dalış yapıp, 10-15 metre derinliklere inerek deniz canlılarını tutup, kabuklu canlıları alıp yeryüzüne çıkarmak kolay değil. Bu mesleğin tarihi bu adada M.Ö. 300’lere kadar gidiyor. M.Ö. çağlarda da kadınlar ekmek parası kazanmak icin tüpsüz dalarak sudan çıkardıkları canlıları satmışlar ve coçuklarına bakmak için analık görevlerini yerlerine getirmişler. 1400’lü yıllarda adada resmi kayıtlara geçen bu meslek aslında baş- ta erkekler tarafından yapılıyormuş ama ardından erkeklerin balıkçılık yaparken aylarca eve dönmemeleriyle beraber ka- dınlar paraya ihtiyaç duymuşlar ve bunu kendi işleri haline ge-
The Island of the Stones and the Island of the Gods
Let me tell you the story of Jeju Island and why it is called as “the Island of the Gods”. Since the island is a volcanic island, there are many stones in the island. Therefore, people used to call the island as the island of the stones and people living in the island have made sculptures by carving these stones thousands of years ago. And they believed that these big eyes of the sculptures protected them from any evil. That is why they made these sculptures everywhere on the island. People start to call the island as “the Island of the Gods” be- cause of this. These sculptures are very important for the local people; they also call these sculptures as “grandfa- ther”. You can see these sculptures everywhere in front of the houses, in the shops, on the bridges, in the forest, at the entrance of the buildings. It is very interesting, but it is real. Another reality about the island is the hard-working wom- en. This island is famous for women divers.
Women divers; also known as Haenyeo
Jeju island hosts the most interesting cultures of the world, they are following a tradition that lives for thousands of years. You will be very surprised about the story that I am going to tell you. Even you may decide to visit the island for understanding the social life in the island.
I always wondered about these women. The women div- ers of the island perform a profession from thousands of years ago. They go diving 10-15m under the sea to gather shellfish without the help of oxygen masks. This is not an easy profession. The history of this profession dates back to 300 BC in the island. The women started to dive without the help of oxygen mask for gathering shellfish from under- water and they cared for their babies. The profession was registered in the official records in the 14th century and men first performed the profession. Then, since when men did not return from fishing for months, the women needed the money and started to perform this job. While the pro- fession was performed by tens of thousands of women, it
