                                                                categories of hardfacing consumables for welding of
                                                                the Hardox and Strenx grades are normally divided
                                                                according to the following principal wear segments:
                                                                4 Impact wear occurs during impingement of solid
                                                                   bodies, as in the case of solid rocks striking the
                                                                   surface, see fig. 20.2. This kind of wear is
                                                                   characterized by severe pounding which tends to
                                                                   deform and, in some cases, break away the surface.

                Hardfacing is a general measure that can be applied
                to structures of different steel grades. However, high
                strength steels such as Hardox and Strenx are not
                frequently subjected to hardfacing because, by design,
                they already have a very high resistance to wear.
                There are also potential drawbacks involved with
                hardfacing, which are discussed further on in this
                chapter. When hardfacing is performed, it is mostly
                done for the Hardox grades due to their use in high

                One instance in which a Hardox application can
                benefit from hardfacing is when there is localized
                wear on one part of the structure. In this situation,
                a Hardox grade with a relatively moderate hardness
