village the night before D Day, and you can see where precisely each landed and what happened to
them. There’s a cinema, and you can walk through a recreated battlefield.
After the museum there was the Church and square to explore, with welcome shady cafes (it was baking
hot) dotted all around. Famously one paratrooper got caught on the spire and had to play dead for hours
until the locals saved him - a replica dummy hangs there still. Even the church marks that night, with a
paratrooper-themed stained glass window. The place was teeming with Americans, many in uniform and
driving Jeeps or riding old Harleys.
We had one more visit planned for the
day: Deadman’s Corner, which
museum is also the location for the
D-Day experience cinema. We didn’t
get there until after 3.30 pm though
and read on the admission board that
you would need at least a couple of
hours to make the most of the place,
including having to wait 30 minutes for
the next cinema showing. So we just
stopped for a coffee and to take some
photos, and added it to the list of
must-sees for the next trip!
That concluded the tour for some,
although the Bayeux group stayed for
another day taking in the sites of that
town and making a trip to Hill 112. You
could easily spend a few more days
here. Next time a visit to the museums that we didn’t manage to see this time would be in order, probably
revisiting some of this tour’s best bits. A fantastic time was had by all, with no serious incidents, lots of
memories, and new friends made.

The Ulysses International meeting in Leysin: recollections of the club secretary.
Day 1 - Trip to Folkstone
The trip started with the usual checks
and rechecks, I think I repacked about
four times as each time I forgot
something considered essential like a
torch, spare glasses or a toothbrush.
The plan was for Andy, Caroline and
Simon to drop by for a sandwich
lunch, I’d join them for the ride to
Ashford where they were staying, I’d
carry on to my chosen hotel, the
illustrious premier Inn at Folkestone.
Well, the best laid plans were thwarted
before I’d even slung a leg over the
