Coen
Coen came into being in the late 1800s with the discovery of
gold in the area, however, with the closure of the last mine in
1916 the town became a stopover for travellers and an
important regional service centre. You can stock up on supplies,
refuel, get mechanical repairs seen to, grab a coffee from the
cafe or spend a night or two.
The (S)Exchange Hotel used to be called the Exchange Hotel.
Rumour has it that as a dare a group of drunken tradies added
the S to the sign on top of the pub, it was removed only to
appear again - and there it stayed.
For those interested in history, Coen Heritage House can be
found in the main street. The house itself was constructed using
recycled materials from the old Mein Telegraph Station. Inside
you’ll find a wealth of information and displays.
20km north is the Coen Quarantine Station. It pays to call in
and find out what items you can bring back on your return trip.
