Weipa Turnoff
51km north of Archer River is the Weipa/Bamaga Junction known
locally as the ‘Y’. From there it’s 145km to Weipa and a further
81km to Mapoon. See page 99 for information on Weipa and (Old)
Mapoon and page 129 for Lockhart River.
Batavia Downs Road Short Cut to Weipa
Batavia Downs Road, a distance of 40km, will take at least an hour,
and 83km, from your trip when travelling between Weipa and the
Tip, and is often a far better road.
Frenchmans Track (West to East)
Approximately 2km north of the Batavia Downs bypass, on the
Telegraph Road, is the turn off to the western entrance to
Frenchmans Track. See page 129 for more information.
Moreton Telegraph Station
Moreton Telegraph Station sits on the bank of the Wenlock River
which flows all year round. The campground, nestled in bushland,
is spacious with plenty of trees for shade. Fire pits are dotted
around the campground but you will need to collect your wood
prior to arriving.
Over 121 bird species have been noted in the area including the
Palm Cockatoo and Magnificent Riflebird. It pays to keep a look
out, you never know what you’ll see.
A short stroll from the cafe brings you to the Barra Hole, a great
place to try your luck for a barramundi, black bream or saratoga. A
pleasant 3km track along the northern bank of the river brings you
to Cave Creek and the lagoon.
Two lonely graves from the early pioneer days, Richard Barker who
died of a gunshot wound and Guy Minto Cragg who succumbed to
malaria, can still be found at Moreton Telegraph Station.
