North of the Jardine
You’ve made it to the Jardine River Ferry Crossing having
battled the red dust and oh so many corrugations. Possibly
fought the Old Telegraph Track and won (or lost) and you’re
now so close to getting to the most northern tip of Australia and
that obligatory photo. However, north of the Jardine in the
Northern Peninsula Area (NPA), further adventure awaits.
The ferry fee is so much more than a trip across the river. It
enables you to camp free of charge from the Dulhunty River to
the Jardine River mouth and all places north, excluding
commercial camping grounds and council parks. Crossing the
Jardine River at the old ford is not permitted, see FAQS page
161.
There is camping at the Jardine River Ferry
Accommodation: Unpowered campsites
Facilities: Toilets and showers
There are some tracks in the NPA that lead to private
properties, they are not included in your permit. ‘Private
Property’, ‘No Entry’ and ‘No Through Road’ do mean just that –
please turn around and leave the way you came.
The NPA does have alcohol cartage limits - it pays to know the
rules before you cross the river.
Respect for the Land & Culture
When you reach the northern banks of the Jardine River, be
aware you’re on land belonging to Traditional Owners. Please
show respect for the land – it’s only with their permission that
the free camping areas have been made available.
Most of the NPA's population reside in the five communities,
however, many families also have local campsites bordering the
beaches, where they fish and hunt. Please be respectful of
these areas, they are not open to general camping.
