issuing orders. Suddenly Leiby knew exactly who it was that
they were up against. Evidently, they were members of the
Polish underground movement, the Armia Krajowa, or perhaps
the N.S.Z.,23 and the blood libel was no spontaneous uprising,
but a conspiracy planned well in advance. Their guns were
always stained with Jewish blood, and they regularly justified
their actions by saying that they were only in opposition to the
Bolshevik government, but unfortunately all the Jews, from
young to old, were representatives of the Bolsheviks, at least in
their eyes.
The bars on the first-floor windows of the Jewish committee
building looked like they were about to succumb to the
onslaught of axe and hammer blows, and Leiby decided that at
this point, there was nothing to lose. He would implement the
idea that he had been turning over in his mind for the last few
minutes, and just hope for the best. He knew that he couldn’t
possibly stop an erupting volcano, but perhaps he’d be able to
divert the flow of lava…
