Coenonympha arcania  (Linnaeus, 1761)               Pearly Heath



                    This beautiful delicate satyrid is a new species to the
                    Levant, observed for the first time in Hatay in June
                    2009. In the south Amanos Mts, it is local and confined                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                 4
                    to wet biotopes in the open Black Pine (Pinus nigra)
                    forest. Adults fly in dappled light along streams bordered
                    by vegetation, alighting on small branches and leaves
                    over water or on low plants. Males are territorial, mud
                    puddlers and sometimes feed on animal dung.

                    /LIH KLVWRU\  univoltine. Eggs are barrel-shaped, with 20
                    fine ribs, and are laid singly or in series along a grass
                    blade, creamy-white when laid, developing brown spots
                    and becoming completely brown before eclosion after

                    a green head, the body is light green with darker green
                    and white lines along the body; the sublateral white
                    band is wider than other lines and the body ends in a
                    short forked tail. The greenish-white pupa has distinctive
                    black streaking and is suspended from a low grass stem,
                    eclosing after two weeks. Overwinters in the larval stage
                    (Lafranchis et al., 2015: 580-581; Warecki, 2010: 130).

                    glomerata (in Hatay). Elsewhere in Turkey, recorded on
                    Brachypodium,  Festuca,  Melica and  Poa  (illustr.) spp.
                    (Hesselbarth et al., 1995(2): 795).

                    TL: Sweden. Distributed from N Portugal, Spain, France,
                    Italy, across Europe, S Norway and Sweden to the Balkans,
                    N Turkey, C & S Urals to Altay. The Amanos population is
                    isolated by ca. 350 km from the nearest in Sivas Province
                    in CN Turkey (Hesselbarth et al., 1995(3): 736) but does
                    not warrant a new subspecific status (Martin Wiemers,
                    pers. comm. to DB). Absent from Cyprus, Syria, Lebanon,
                    Israel, Jordan and the Sinai Peninsula.
