Apart from the odd sociopath or psychopath, most of us have an empathy gene that causes us to feel uncomfortable accepting a favour, we may be thankful, but we are uncomfortable until we have returned the favour, usually at a higher value.
People in an era when sending Christmas cards was a common seasonal ritual, would religiously send cards year in and year out, to virtual strangers, purely by virtue of the fact they had somehow ended up on this persons mailing list.
Imagine you as a business owner had 6 new clients, all delivered by someone you’d only met a few times. Would you feel somewhat compelled to call them, invite them out to lunch, or perhaps stalk them on Linkedin or Facebook, with a view to finding out who they are? In fact you’d feel mysteriously drawn towards wanting to build a relationship and reciprocate.
Cultivate the habit of observing what people do. Cultivate the habit of taking an interest in people’s passions.

1000 incidental social media or digital business connections carries less weight than a half dozen tangible favours done in the non-digital world.
