TECH TALK
Dr. Jim's Computer Repair
Jim Sanders
Welcome to Tech Talk Fall Edition.
Temperatures are changing, green leaves are sporting vibrant colors and yes, the scammers are alive and doing what the
do best. Now we need to be more vigilant than ever.
The most recent scam going around has to do with Bell Canada’s decommissioning of copper cabling and switching to
fibre. While the change over is real the scammers have developed a cunning scheme to cheat you out of your hard-earned
cash. This all starts with a phone call (normally looking like a local call) the caller identifies themselves as a Bell Canada Rep
and informs you of the cable change-over (this part is true). From here they inform you that your security needs to be
updated on your computer, at which they will send you a link for Aweray which is remote support software which is then
installed on your computer allowing them access to install another remote access application called Anydesk (this gives
them more control on your computer). Once they have this it’s a free for all. This is a really new scam that is going around
in this area NOW. Please be aware of it and please note Bell Canada will NEVER need access to your computer ever for
anything at all.
When in doubt SHUT DOWN or call me and ask if this is legit.
Until next time.
