“When they awoke that Sunday morning, not one of these officers was looking forward to an exchange of gunfire with an offender who had held his own family hostage and then escaped, running through a quiet neighborhood shooting in- discriminately,” said CPMF Executive Director Phil Cline.
The eight members of the Department — Officers Luis Lo- pez, Christian Nunez, Efrain Rodriguez and David Hardt and Sergeants Michael Keeney, Scott Kravitz, Sonia Rios and Erik Seng — each played a part in eventually ending the man’s threat. The incident began after police learned from a woman who walked into the 25th District that a mother and her in- fant were being held against their will in an apartment near Diversey and LeClaire.
Lopez and Nunez were able to free the pair, but the man refused to cooperate with the officers. Negotiations ensued, and SWAT eventually arrived on scene. However, as a perime- ter was being established, the man ran out of the apartment, firing a gun at Lopez. Keeney returned fire, but the man con- tinued to run.
Additional officers responded to the area as the man — who at different times shot at Rios and pointed the gun at Rodri- guez, Hardt and Seng — ran through yards and tried to hide in a basement stairwell. He was eventually wounded when offi- cers fired their weapons as he continued to threaten officers with the gun. Cline said the incident offered a vivid example of how quickly things can change for an officer.
“These officers responded to a call for help and took actions to eliminate a threat before anyone else could be harmed,” Cline said. “It is something they do every day.” d
