Chicago Police Officer Michael Ceriale had only been on the job for about a year when he took to the streets for an under- cover drug surveillance operation in August 1998.
A 16-year-old gang member exited a building and opened fire on 26-year-old Ceriale, who was hit with one shot in the abdomen just, below his vest. Six days later, Ceriale died.
Although 20 years have passed, Ceriale is never far from the Department’s collective memory. On Aug. 21, dozens of offi- cers and members of the community attended an outdoor roll call in the 12th District filled with prayers, solemn salutes and fond remembrances of an officer that no one in the family of blue will ever forget. d
