On February 12, officers responded to a fire in the 3800 block of North Fremont. Upon arrival and entrance to the building, Sergeant Thomas Surma located an unconscious fe- male on the fifth floor, where it seemed the fire was more in- tense. With the assistance of Officer Patrick Hayes, he moved the victim to the fourth floor, where paramedics took over. Of- ficers Jose Morales and Victor Lopez then entered the build-
ing, clearing additional victims on the fifth floor. Although the sergeant and the officers suffered major smoke inhalation, they bravely risked their lives in this harrowing situation.
It is with great appreciation that the Fraternal Order of Police Chicago Lodge #7 presents Officers Patrick Hayes, Victor Hayes and Jose Morales and Sergeant Thomas Surma with Life Saving Awards.
