How does passage of 9/11 victim fund bill affect CPD members?
On Monday, July 29, President Donald Trump signed into law an act that authorizes the extension of the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund.
“Today, we come together as one nation to sup- port our Sept. 11 heroes, to care for their families and to renew our eternal vow — never, ever forget,” Trump said during a White House Rose Garden cer-
JAY emony, calling the fund’s extension part of “a sacred RYAN duty.”
The president was joined by more than 200 in- dividuals affected by the 9/11 terrorist attacks, including more than 60 first responders.
“The love and loyalty of our 9/11 responders knew no bounds,” Trump said. “They answered terror with the emotion- al strength of true American warriors.”
How does this affect the Chicago Police Department?
If you were part of the contingency sent to New York City after the attacks, you may be eligible for benefits.
Because we know that many of the responders who were part of the rescue/recovery efforts have been subsequently diag- nosed with various forms of cancer, it is critical to assess wheth- er you have been exposed.
To determine if you are eligible, visit www.vcf.gov and begin the process to file a claim. Claims can be filed by the member or their survivors.
