Cops in the Community
Summer made its presence known in full force in July with festivals, a much-needed heat wave and, of course, the search for an alligator. Chicago Police Officers stepped up in a variety of ways, but always with an eye on supporting and connecting the community ⁠— no matter the weather or where they met the residents they serve.
Snapper chat
The city’s offbeat story this summer was the hunt for the Hum- boldt Park alligator dubbed Chance the Snapper. Officers from the area helped keep people a safe distance from the lagoon but also kept their eyes open for any sightings of the reptile, which eluded capture for several days.
5th District
Not everyone sat back and relaxed over the long holiday weekend. Officers in the Fifth District joined with other city agencies to participate in Operation Clean-Up in the Roseland neighborhood. The initiative fo- cuses on public safety and quality-of-life issues.
Mounted Unit
When the Rolling Stones hit Chicago on their “No Filter” tour in June, the CPD Mounted Patrol was on hand at Soldier Field to help keep the crowds rocking out safely before, during and after the show.
15th District
Beating the heat
Temps soared into the upper 90s and the heat index blis- tered well above 100 during the city’s hottest stretch of the year in July. While encouraging
residents to use the city’s cooling centers, some offi- cers took things a step fur- ther by handing out water to encourage people to be safe and stay hydrated in the sweltering conditions.
School might be out but the 15th District Officer Friendly Program hasn’t slowed down. Officers visited the Because I Can resource center in Austin to meet day campers and give them a chance to check out the officers’ squad car.
